Rams eye finals berth across all the grades
THE Northern Hotel Rams Reserves got their chance to shine last week, looking to win their way into the finals from a second place finish in the regular season.
The Reserves faced down third-placed Lismore Thistles in a bruising encounter while the Prems had the week off.
Byron opened the scoring three minutes in with a superb cross from Jonathan Pierce to be finished by Kazuhiro Tsukamoto unmarked in the box.
Another close range goal from Conor Cannon was cancelled out seconds before halftime when the Rams conceded a penalty that let Thistles back into the game at 3-2.
Halfway through the second half, a red card sent Thistle's primary defender to the showers but late in the second half, a defensive error saw a long ball roll into the Byron goal to give Thistles an equaliser.
Late in the game, a handball in the Thistles box gave Byron their fourth goal and Conor Cannon his hat-trick then barely a minute later. Cannon crossed to Will Ennis who made no mistake, giving the Rams a respectable 5-3 win.
The Reserves face Richmond Rovers in Lismore Friday night (7pm) with the Premiers taking on Rovers at home on Saturday (2pm). Byron Bay Wildcats women's second division team had a convincing 4-2 semi final win over Italo Stars last Sunday, taking the Wildcats to the next round of finals against Goonellabah, in Goonellabah, on Sunday (12.30pm). In a successful season for Byron Bay FC, all men's and women's senior teams are in finals.
