Rain hits cricket

Byron Bay

Rain washed out the second day of the second grade Coastal League fixture at Ballina’s Fripp Oval, with the match ending in a draw.

With the first Ashes Test on this weekend, there is no play in the local competitions and the following match is a bye for the Bay, so they have a break for three weekends.

The 1st XI went back to Les Cave Oval, Murwillumbah, to continue their innings of 1/11 from last week against Ballina Bears, chasing 246.

Despite the efforts of Adam Meads, Jake Lewis and Matt Irwin, who all got starts, the Bay fell short and were all out for 162 to go down on the first innings.

The signs are there that the bats are close to combining well and this should lead to a win shortly. The next two-day game will be at Oakes Oval, Lismore, against Marist Brothers on December 4.

Short Stats: Ballina Bears 8/246 defeated Byron Bay 162 (Adam Meads 34, Matt Irwin 26, Jake Lewis 26, Todd Arthur 18, Ian Callan 12, Marty Irwin 12, B Collins 5/53, S Jacobs 4/37) at Murwillumbah.

Fourth grade

Rain also affected the Fourth Graders and reduced their one-day match against Mullum Bruns at the Byron Bay Memorial Rec Ground to 35 overs each.

Mullum batted their overs out and were 8/108 at the change of innings.

Once the Bay broke their big opening partnership of 70, the rest went cheaply.

The Bay was a couple of players short in the field and with a small batting list, finished to be all out for 76.

When the team gets it full squad on the paddock, it will be quite capable of getting the right results.

Next game the Bay hosts the Lennox Head boys at the Rec Ground after the time-out for the Test, so come to training, contact Bruce or Syl and the Bay will give the Lennox Head Pirates a real shake.

Short Stats: Mullum 8/108 dec (J Iwazsco 43, J Evans 23, Wayne Goldstone 2/8, Cam Stone 2/8, Levi Shouldice 2/10, Adam Clark 1/15) defeated Byron Bay 76 (Levi Shouldice 22, Geraint Price-Jones 17, J Hughes 3/11, F Fazem 3/23) at the Byron Bay Rec.
