Tom's on cloud nine after his Bathurst 1000 experience

TOM RANN is still on cloud nine after Ford Performance Racing drivers Mark Winterbottom and Steven Richards won a nail-biting Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000, at Mount Panorama on the weekend.

The Spring Grove mechanic started his dream job with the factory Ford team this year after taking out the Telstra Racing Recruit series, a competition against other third-year apprentices from around the nation.

After a tense start to race day, the 21-year-old said excitement built throughout the day as Ford got closer to taking its first Bathurst win in five years.

"The atmosphere and the way the crowd reacts to everything and being at the podium was just incredible," he said.

"There was an awesome buzz in the team and so many guys in the team worked so hard for this for years.

"It's hard to put the feeling into words, it was amazing.

"It was just so so positive; I don't think I have ever been in a room with so much positivity."

Celebrations were enhanced after Ford announced it would continue its relationship with FPR.

In his first time at the famous circuit, Tom said the whole Bathurst experience from working in the pits to the track was surreal, and exceeded his expectations.

"I had an opportunity to have a run around the track and get a full appreciation of the incline and the decline so I understand now why it's a world-class track."

After enjoying the revelry, Tom said the team packed up by about 8pm and continued to celebrate with the drivers.

Celebrations were put on hold when the team arrived back at their Melbourne headquarters, with all hands on deck to prepare their cars for the Gold Coast 600 on October 25-27.
