Questions over whether people died in PNG student shooting

THERE was confusion on Thursday in Papua New Guinea over whether four protesters were shot dead when police opened fire the previous day on students demonstrating against Prime Minister Peter O'Neill.

Opposition MPs told parliament that four people had been killed, but the government said no one had died and only five had been injured.

Port Moresby General Hospital chief executive Grant Muddle told the Guardian there were no deaths at his hospital, but eight people had been treated for gunshot wounds.
