'Queen Elizabeth II shows up tin-pot Republicans'
AUSTRALIAN monarchists are celebrating today a major milestone in our history.
This is the day when the Queen of Australia, Queen Elizabeth II, becomes the longest reigning British monarch ever. She passes Queen Victoria's record of 63 years and 216 days. King George III is third, at 59 years and 96 days.
This magnificent achievement quite eclipses the periods of office of the 12 US Presidents and 13 Australian Prime Ministers during the same period.
A full four years before ascending the throne she made her lifelong vow to the people of the British Commonwealth:
"I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service and to the service of our great imperial family. May God help me keep my vow."
"Her Majesty's lifetime of dedication to duty and service stand in stark contrast to the greed and self-aggrandisement of thousands of tin-pot Republican dictators and politicians of all political persuasions," said Toowoomba's self-confessed Royals tragic Stan Klan.
He attributes Australia's stable and robust democracy to our system of constitutional monarchy.
The Queen is styled "Queen of Australia" not head of state - that term does not appear in our constitution. That we have a foreign head of state is a Republican lie. Like Switzerland, we do not have a head of state. The Queen of Australia is represented by a Governor General, chosen by a parliament that is chosen by the people.
The Queen herself has no power in Australia, as arch-Republican Gough Whitlam discovered in 1975. An appeal was made to Buckingham Palace against his dismissal when our two houses of parliament were in deadlock. The Australian Governor General acted as referee and resolved the crisis by dismissing the Prime Minister who had appointed him.
No civil wars in Australia; no military dictatorships. Constitutional monarchy - the crown and the people working together. "And the personification of the crown is the wonderful woman whose lifetime of service we celebrate today," Mr Klan said.
"But the glass I raise to her this evening won't contain Australian or English bubbles. No, it will be from the Republic of France. That's one thing a republic can do properly."
Stan Klan, formerly principal of Fairholme College Toowoomba and now CEO of Great Trains of Europe Tours, is patron of the Toowoomba branch of Australians for Constitutional Monarchy.
