Puppeteers string together top act
ABDUL the Amazing, Willowthe Witch and Smoking Joe theJamaican Drummer are just a few of the marionettes who are likely to star at the Nimbin Show this weekend.
Genevieve and Dave Davies, puppeteers of 17 years, will be keeping the crowd entertained with one of their renowned puppet shows.
Together they have created 16 marionettes made from papermachete, wood, human and horse hair and recycled cloth, which the couple skilfully bring to life during their performances.
The shows are entertaining, educational and funny.
“They also have a lot of musicin them,” Ms Davies said.
The couple have performed at the Olympic Village during the Sydney 2000 Games, Woodford Folk Festival, Byron Bay Bluesfest, Port Fairy Folk Festival, and at many environmental conferences and schools.
The performing arts are a bit of a family affair – their six children are also all skilled performers.
Gareth, 31, and Vaughn, 21, together make up the bluegrass duo The Barkers Vale Brother, who will be performing at the Nimbin Markets on Sunday afternoon.
Daughters Freya, 27, Mindy, 19, Lowana, 15, and Elanora, 12, play a multitude of musical instruments and are all skilled circus performers.
The Nimbin Show, which kicks off the show season around theregion, will feature horse events all weekend.
There also will be lots of entertainment for children, including a guinea pig pet show, gumboot-throwing, a dog and duck show, a reptile display, the best decorated bicycle competition, children's pet show, dog high jumping, whip cracking and a talent quest.
There will be musical entertainment all weekend by local performers Durga Babies, Gypsy Rollers, The Wanderers, Nomad Dancers, Tuntable Circus and The Mona Lizard Duo.
The puppet show is on Sunday at 11am on the main stage.
