Punters dress up as Cup postponed

THEY were all dressed up for the Cup.

But rather than packing the frocks and suits away when the race day scheduled for last Sunday was postponed because of the weather, punters gathered at the Park Hotel which sponsored the Cup, for an afternoon of fun.

Hotel licensee Andrew Sheridan hosted the Claytons race day, which still featured a Fashions on the Field parade with prizes.

“A fun day was had by all,” Andrew said.

Despite glorious sunshine on Sunday, the decision to postpone the races was made on Saturday. Wet weather in the week leading up to the Cup and another 45mm of rain on Saturday, sealed the race day’s fate.

Ballina Jockey Club chairman Robert Pitt said the track was already wet and it only needed another 10 or 20mm for the race day to be postponed.

“But, we had about 45mm so the course was just too wet and unsafe for horses and jockeys,” he said.

“I am very disappointed as we had put a lot of work into the Cup.

“We will see if we can hold the Cup at a later date, but even that’s doubtful.”
