POWER OUTAGE: Huge gum tree branch brings down powerlines
UPDATE 3.30pm: A POWER outage in The Channon and Nimbin areas was caused by a large gum tree branch falling on main powerlines at about 2pm this afternoon.
The powerlines are down on The Channon Rd near Coronation Park and traffic control is in place.
An Essential Energy spokeswoman said the power line was a "main feeder" line and the incident had left a lot of people without power.
She said an automatic system shuts off the power in instances like this as a protection measure. It initially cut power to 729 homes, but power has been restored to about 700 people as the incident was isolated.
Power will remain off for those 30 customers until about 6.30pm.
She said Essential Energy advises people to remain at least 8m away from fallen or damaged power lines and to call 132080.
