Politicians farewell former NSW Premier Neville Wran

POLITICIANS from both sides have paid tribute to former NSW Premier Neville "Nifty" Wran, who was honoured at a state funeral in Sydney today.

Flags flew at half mast on the Sydney Harbour bridge and Labor flags draped the stage of the city's town hall, which was packed with more than 1500 mourners.

Among them was former Labor prime ministers Paul Keating and Bob Hawke, Leader of the Opposition Bill Shorten, former NSW Labor Premier Bob Carr, NSW Premier Mike Baird and former premier Barry O'Farrell.

Remembering a passionate politician and "champion of swearing", Mr Keating said he doubted there would be a soul in the room who didn't believe the people of NSW owed his friend a "great debt".

Mr Wran served as NSW Premier from 1976 to 1986.

He died in Sydney following a battle with dementia and is survived by his wife Jill and daughter Kim.
