Police officer forced to shoot badly injured wallaby

POLICE have assured the public that an incident at Woodburn in the early hours of yesterday morning, whereby three gunshots were heard near the town's petrol station is nothing to be concerned about.

Police were called to the scene at around 1am, where a car had hit a wallaby which had then become lodged in the front of the vehicle, seriously injured, Sergeant Rob Marr of Richmond LAC said.

The police officer attending moved the car and animal to a safe location and euthanized the wallaby using his pistol, Sgt Marr said.

The incident had begun to do the rounds on social media, with a number of people concerned about the location of the shooting and number of shots fired, but police assured the public that the incident was all handled under correct protocol.
