Police launch appeal to find rapist who posed as tradesman

VICTORIAN police have redoubled efforts to hunt down a serial rapist who posed as a tradesman to get into victims' homes.

Authorities have launched an appeal to catch the offender who was active between 1984 and 1997 in Melbourne.

Police believe the man wore a tradesman's outfit to gain entry to Housing Commission flats where he attacked six victims, including a pregnant woman and a young girl.

The victims were all Asian and had little grasp of the English language.

The rapist left DNA at the scene of 1991 attack on a 28-year-old woman that took place while her three-year-old son hid under the bed.

That DNA has now been linked to a second series of offences in 1996 and 1997.

Police believe there may be more unreported victims.
