FOOTBALL: Mauricio Pochettino says his Tottenham Hotspur side needs to be aggressive and confident when it takes on English Premier League leader Chelsea at White Hart Lane on Thursday morning (AEST).

Spurs moved into the top four after a thumping 4-1 success at Watford on New Year's Day.

Last season at the same stage they had 35 points from 19 games with 33 goals scored and 15 conceded.

This time round they are on on 39 points from 19 games with 37 goals scored and 14 conceded and only two defeats, none at home but are 10 points behind Chelsea, with Pochettino spelling out just how difficult the game against the Blues would be.

"Chelsea are in an unbelievable situation,” he said.

"It's going to be tough for both teams but we play at White Hart Lane and need to be aggressive.

"We will be very confident and will try to show we are better than them.”

Harry Kane and Dele Alli scored two apiece at Vicarage Road to close within a point of Arsenal which won 2-0 over Crystal Palace, thanks in part to a wonder goal from Olivier Giroud.

Kane said Tottenham could not be in a better mood before the Chelsea game after making it four wins in a row.

"We're excited. It's a massive game,” Kane told Tottenham's website.

"It will be a great atmosphere.

"We have to be focused and make sure we put in a good performance. We have reached halfway and are in good shape.

"We know we can beat them.”
