BUILT in 1896, the Byron Bay Post Office has been recognised for its significant heritage vales and has been placed on the Commonwealth Heritage List.

Local MP Justine Elliot welcomed the announcement, which she said would mean increased protection for the post office.

"Byron Bay Post Office is located at the centre of Byron Bay's civic and administrative centre and it is an important icon for our community," she said.

"I am very pleased to welcome this listing on the Commonwealth Heritage List.

"This announcement is important because it provides national recognition for a significant community icon.

"This is also important because heritage listing provides protection into the future."
