PM's message a highlight of Big Banana's 50th birthday party

WHEN the Prime Minister takes time out from his busy schedule to send a video message of congratulations on reaching 50 years of age, you know you're an important part of the Australian psyche.

And so it turned out for the Big Banana when Tony Abbott delivered a personal message as part of the iconic tourist attraction's 50th birthday celebrations on Saturday night.

The message on the night from the Prime Minister highlighted the wide-spread appreciation of the iconic "traffic-stopper".

"Although there are more than 150 big things across our land... there is none more iconic than Australia's very first big thing - the Big Banana," Mr Abbott said.
