Plenty of fish to fry in China

A SUNSHINE Coast fish-farming technology company has become a significant contributor to a $300 million fish farm in China.

RADAQUA, based at Glenview, has secured the design and management responsibility of the fish-farming sector of the mammoth project, which started construction recently at Zhao'an, about 200km from Xiamen, in Fujian province, China.

The local company's involvement involves the development of marine recirculation systems for the farming of coral trout and grouper, and the ongoing management of the facility.

RADAQUA managing director Rod Missen said the project aimed to secure China's food needs.

"It's all about food security. China consumes more than 50% of seafood production. Their market is huge, so they need to secure that in a sustainable manner," he said.

"The ultimate investment in China, through a staged development, will see an annual production of 5000 tonnes of marine finfish, within a 16.6 hectare bio-secure site, with all nutrient and energy streams being fully utilised.

"Pristine, premium product delivered through an industry-leading production system will deliver the core outcomes of product quality, environment sustainability and economic viability of operations."

The project will involve between 20 and 50 local staff who will fly regularly to China to manage the farm.

Mr Missen said the company's involvement in the project followed two years of relationship building with the Chinese.

"It's not about price. It's about building a strong relationship," he said.

Sunshine Coast Council is working with the company to expand the technology to a larger site in Xiamen.

Cr Jenny McKay, who attended a ground-breaking event while on holidays, described RADAQUA's achievement as a great mile

stone. "I know the company's success will position it very well for further expansion into Xiamen and from there, potentially across the nation," she said.
