Bruns picture house set to get a revamp

BAZ Luhrmann couldn't have imagined a better premise for a high-camp Australiana musical.

Internationally acclaimed producers of circus and cabaret have saved the iconic Brunswick Pictures building from demolition, with plans to rouse the charming beach town with international acts.

The new Brunswick Picture House, slated for a summer opening, will be a mixed arts venue, with an adjoining cafe. It will host live theatre, kids' shows, circus performances and classic films.

The theatre will be a nostalgic trip for locals - the same frangipani trees will infuse the grand theatre with the fragrance of summer cinema.

Brunswick boy Hamish McCormick, who now lives with his young family on the property, introduced Brett Haylock, of acclaimed London-based cabaret La Soiree, to the place. It was love at first sight.

"The site is so old-world show biz. Other developers were going to demolish it. We had to save it," Mr Haylock said.

"We're working closely with council. It is our intention to create a vibrant, revived version of what the picture house once was. We are financing the project with our international productions and will be inviting international performers. It will be the starting point of the 'circus corridor' from here to the Gold Coast."
