Picnic area at Wategos gets upgrade

Work has started on upgrading the picnic area at Wategos and also a section of the foreshore area.
Cape Byron Reserve Trust chairperson, Yvonne Stewart, said the improvements would be the first stage of a project that would eventually see a walkway along the entire length of the Wategos foreshore.
“Work is expected to be completed in early June and will provide better access to Wategos Beach, an improved picnic area and a safer walkway along part of Marine Parade for the many visitors to the beach,” Ms Stewart said.
“Planning for the project has been under way for the past four years and funding has been provided by the Cape Byron Trust, the National Parks and Wildlife Service and the Byron Bay Malibu Club.”
Ms Stewart praised the malibu club for donating part of the funds raised from the annual malibu classic for the last nine years to the trust.
Plans of the work can be viewed at the trust office in Tallow Beach Road.
