Piano concert for senior citizens

In an effort to involve more senior citizens in activities at the Byron Bay Community Centre, a free piano concert featuring the centre’s magnificent Steinway grand piano was held last week.

About 40 senior citizens from three aged care homes in the Byron Shire attended.

The centre’s project officer, Jim Beatson, said the concert was a huge success.

“The senior citizens really enjoyed it,” he said.

“It’s the first of many that we want to hold.”

Three pianists performed, including Marie Caldwell from the Ballina Musical Society; Lyn McBurney, diversional therapist from the Orthodox Nursing Home, and Tim Shanasy, a jazz specialist who plays by ear.

The Steinway grand piano was built in 1986 and was purchased by the community in 2003.

At the centre’s opening concert, the Steinway was played by the renowned David Helfgott.

Since then it has been played by some of the world’s leading pianists, including Roger Woodward and Simon Tedeschi.
