NORTH Lakes Camera House owner Brett Peters has launched an ambitious e-commerce site styled like an eBay for photographers.

Digital Camera Exchange was born about 12 months ago when Brett's son was looking online for a new pushbike.

They stumbled upon the Bike Exchange site and the idea was planted.

DCE launched on May 1, crashed on its third day due to traffic spikes and drew 20,000 hits in the first month.

It has more than 400 registered users so far and has opened with a zero commission for the first three months. Future commissions will be capped at 5%. Anyone from hobby photographers to professionals and retailers clearing end-of-line stock can list new and used cameras, accessories and equipment for sale.

The seller chooses if they want an auction with or without a reserve, or to list with a buy-it-now price.

"There are 700 or 800 sites where you can buy new camera equipment, but there's only Gumtree, eBay and Grays Online for used cameras or end-of-line photographic equipment, collectables or excess stock.

"The whole idea was to have a completely different offering to a traditional retailer and to a traditional photographic store."

Mr Peters said marketing was his biggest challenge, but he was using social media initially with a view to ramping up to a dedicated campaign once the site gets established.

He also sung the praises of Redcliffe web design company Puro Design for building his site.

"After extensive searching, even overseas, I was really pleased we found Puro 20 minutes down the road," he said.

"They've been fantastic, they've built it on time and it works so well."
