Peugeot 308 armoury complete with 1.6-litre turbo petrol
SOME extra firepower has been added to the Peugeot 308 arsenal.
Arriving simultaneously with the 308 GT variants is a new 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine.
This powerplant is a zesty unit which sits one rung below the sporty GT offerings, and a step above the 96 kilowatt base models launched in Australia last year.
Perfect for drivers who like some acceleration punch without neck-snapping performance, the 110kW donk is a lovely and smooth option.
Developed in partnership with BMW it can hammer off the line to 100kmh in 8.5 seconds (hatch).
Yet it's most rewarding through the mid-range and especially effective when called to overtake or sling you out of a corner.
Lifting from 70kmh to 110kmh was done in an instant during out test outing. That ability, combined with the 308's impressive balance and composure makes for a rewarding drive.
Although that performance doesn't cost you at the bowser. Average fuel consumption is 6.6 litres per 100km, which is pretty impressive for an engine with rural and city dexterity.
This engine is a member of the e-THP engine family that delivers fuel efficiency and reduces emissions by about 10% compared to the previous generation.
Prices start just below $33,000 plus on-roads. The powerplant is available in both Allure and Allure Premium specification grades, in both wagon and hatch body styles.
Equipment includes daytime running lights, cruise control, six-speaker CD player, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, six airbags, 16-inch alloys, 24.5cm touch-screen infotainment, front and rear parking sensors, leather-covered steering wheel and hand brake, dual-zone climate control air con, sat nav and head-up instrument cluster.
Allure Premium gains alcantara trim, larger 18-inch alloys, panoramic glass sunroof, and updated safety gear incorporating radar cruise control, emergency collision alert and emergency collision braking system.
