Molotov cocktail thrown at party

‘AN ACT of stupidity’ is how Lismore police Inspector Nicole Bruce described a Molotov cocktail attack near police outside a party in Goonellabah on Friday night.

Police officers attending the noisy party in Ballina Road, Goonellabah, had a narrow escape when the petrol bomb was thrown on the road near a police car, just 50 metres from the officers.

The petrol bomb burst into flames as police were trying to disperse the crowd.

“It’s extremely dangerous to even possess the separate components of one of these bombs,” Insp Bruce said.

“They are volatile and dangerous to anyone within the vicinity.”

The petrol bomb was thrown after police were called to a party about 11pm on Friday, where a large group of youths aged between 15 and 20 were allegedly carrying sticks.

About 50 metres away, police officers noticed a fire which they identified as being started by a Molotov cocktail, Insp Bruce said.

“There were the remains of a glass bottle, a wick and the smell of petrol,” Insp. Brice said.

.“Police spoke to a number of people within the group who were known to them.”

However, after a search of the area, the police were unable to identify anyone responsible for the incident.

No one was injured during the incident and no damage was caused to the police car, police said.

Insp Bruce said it was extremely rare for an incident involving a petrol bomb to be reported on the Northern Rivers.

“It’s quite unusual,” she said.

“In the two years since I started there’s never been a petrol bomb like this.

“It’s a great concern that someone’s using this type of dangerous material.”

Police are now appealing to the public for any information about the petrol bomb attack.

Any information may be provided anonymously and will be dealt with in the strictest confidence. Anyone with information on the incident can contact Lismore Police by calling Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
