Petition circulating to strip Iggy of Billboard awards

FORGET ending world hunger, making a difference to climate change or bringing peace to the Middle East.

The issue that's cultivated the masses has been none other than our own Mullumbimby super star Iggy Azalea.

Tens of thousands of people from around the world have signed an online petition calling for the pop princess to be stripped of her Billboard Music Awards for Top Streaming Artist, Top Rap Artist and Top Rap Song.

In just 24 hours the petition received more than 5000 signatures.

The petition, launched on change.org 10 days after Azalea took home her awards, called the awards "invalid".

"The eligibility time period for nominations is March 10th, 2014 through March 2015," it said.

"'Fancy' was released on February 17th, 2014, nearly a month before the eligibility starting.

"This is unfair to the other nominees in these category, especially to "anaconda" by Nicki Minaj, who most like would've won.

"Billboard did not follow their own guidelines and should have to recalculate these nominations without "Fancy" as a nominee."

However, an update posted yesterday said the producers of the award show had confirmed they would not reconsider the award.

"To everyone who signed the petition to retract Iggy's Billboard Music Award, thank you first and foremost; however, a spokesperson for Dick Clark Productions, who produces the award show, has said that the award is still Iggy's unfortunately.

"We got to nearly 20,000 signatures, which is freaking insane."

Dick Clark Productions has told US media that the March-to-March period is not based on the song's release date, but rather its chart performance and sales during that time.

Both Iggy Azalea and Nicki Minaj have kept quiet on social media over the issue.
