Perry counting on team effort to keep Ashes alive

CRICKET: The English women's cricket team can restore some much-needed national pride and retain their Ashes trophy by beating Australia in the second one-day match of the multi-format series at the MCG today.

While their male countrymen's tour Down Under is in tatters, England's women have taken a stranglehold on their series by winning the sole Test in Perth, and the first ODI at the MCG on Sunday.

Another two points from a win in the day-nighter will wrap up the series, but star Aussie all-rounder Ellyse Perry (pictured) said a good team performance could keep Australia's hopes alive.

"In the scheme of things it's about us as a team putting the performance together that we want to," she said.

Perry, who has also represented Australia at football, followed her player of the match effort in the Test match with an unbeaten 65 in Sunday's first ODI.
