PAUL Roos was officially announced as the new head coach of the Melbourne Demons at a media conference today at the MCG.

Roos, who coached Sydney to its drought-breaking 2005 premiership, has signed a two-year deal with Melbourne, with an option for a third year.

The highly-regarded Roos coached the Swans to seven finals series' from eight full seasons, before handing over the reins to John Longmire in 2011.

Roos reinforced how grateful he was to Sydney for the experience he had there and recognised he had a hard road ahead.

"I'm looking forward to what is going to be a huge challenge," he said.
