Party time for Jets after victory

THE A-League's 1000th game ended in celebrations for Newcastle Jets and Nathan Burns at AAMI Park yesterday.

Burns scored a brace as the Jets surprised their hosts to take a 2-1 victory and move up to third on the A-League ladder.

On loan from Incheon United in South Korea, Burns struck once in each half, although the home side dominated for long periods.

Kevin Muscat's side lacked a cutting edge, however, despite levelling through James Troisi early in the second half.

The defeat sees the Victory slip to sixth.

Muscat thought his team should have had a penalty in the first minute when Jets keeper Mark Birighitti collided with Mark Milligan.

But referee Alan Milliner did not concur.

The home side wasted good chances before Burns scored his first A-League goal since October 2007 just before the break.

Five minutes into the second half the hosts were level but on 66 minutes Burns' second goal gave the visitors all three points.

Mitch Nichols almost equalised, but Birighitti saved and Troisi missed two chances but the Jets always looked like they would hold on.
