Parkes jags round win

A final minute win on Monday has put Byron Bay surfer Garrett Parkes into round three of the ASP Billabong World Junior Championship being held at North Narrabeen.

Parkes was trailing in his opening heat, but he scored a last-minute, eight-point ride to book his passage through to the next round.

Trailing by half a point and with less than a minute remaining, Parkes garnered the last wave of the heat and jagged a nice ride to extract scores of 7-8.5 from the judges to overhaul Reunion’s Maxime Huscenot.

Two other North Coast surfers Owen Wright and Stu Kennedy are also into round three.

The Billabong ASP World Junior Championships mirror the competition format of the ASP World Tour and is considered the sport’s ‘crystal ball’ for aspiring champions.

In addition a finals placing in the tournament affords the successful surfer an unrivalled seeding on to the World Qualifying Series (WQS) that serves as a springboard to the ASP World Tour.
