Parcell finally taking flight with Sea Eagles

IPSWICH product Matt Parcell exudes a lot of confidence for someone who has played only a handful of NRL games and plays in a key position where he has to make a decision on every attacking play.

When the 23-year-old, who had played six NRL games off the bench for Brisbane in 2015 arrived on Sydney's northern beaches, few NRL fans had heard of him, including his new coach Trent Barrett who was told some glowing things by Wayne Bennett and Shane Walker, his coach at the Jets.

Barrett was informed Parcell was super quick, a great support player and, most of all, an exceptionally dedicated kid who wanted to make it all the way to the top.

While the peak of the mountain is still in the distance, the signs are there for all to see and the potential, once he works out his combinations with halfback Daly Cherry- Evans and fullback Brett Stewart.

"Matt strikes me as someone who continually strives to get better and that's what you need as a rugby league player, especially someone who is as new to the game as he is," said Cherry-Evans of the young No.9.

"If he continues to learn and work hard as a player, he's already set a high benchmark as a standard and if he continues on, I am sure his name will be in lights real soon."

One thing Parcell hasn't unpacked from his suitcase yet is his running attacking game.

As a smart young player Parcell has focused on working his way into the NRL with simple goals but it won't be long before fans see his flair.

"I was feeling confident when I played four games in a row and the injury (hamstring) was a bit of a setback," he said.

"Being a hooker the first thing you have to do is aim up in defence and they can take a bit out of you, so I have to get used to that.

"I'm feeling more confident now and a big part of my game is support play.

"I'm excited about what combination I can build with Daly Cherry-Evans."
