Pampering day a welcome gift for mum of autistic child
A LISMORE single mum of a child on the autism spectrum has enjoyed a pampering at the Byron at Byron Spa thanks to the Weekend Star and a friend's generosity.
Gold Coast single father of two Tony Roberts won a deluxe spa treatment at The Byron at Byron Spa last month through The Northern Star's Weekend section.
"I couldn't believe it," said Tony, of the Gold Coast. "But I had no way of getting to Byron to claim my prize. I was talking about it on Facebook and Wendy Briggs jokingly put her hand up to relieve me of my problem. So I told the girl from The Byron at Byron to call Wendy and surprise her."
Tony and Wendy are both single parents of two children on the autism spectrum.
"I run a monthly learning and support group called Centre of Gravity Community Centre at my home and that's how I met Tony," said Wendy.
Wendy drove from Lismore to Byron Bay last week to indulge at the hands of the therapists at The Byron at Byron.
"It was just what I needed. I really let go," said Wendy of her 90-minute therapy.
"The cocoon was awesome. Just being wrapped up like that was really warming. And I loved having somebody play with my hair.
"I think taking time out is a must but it's also something that mothers don't tend to do. We tend to put ourselves at the bottom of the pecking order. We need to remember that if we go down, the whole family goes down too."
Wendy's work has helped many families through the maze of autism.
"It's a complex condition," Wendy said. "Part of my work is to increase awareness and acceptance. These people are individuals and have a right to live in the community in their own unique way."
Wendy is seeking prize donations for a raffle to raise money for Centre of Gravity Community Centre. Phone her on 0418 280 669.
