Page called on to stop West Byron development

BALLINA MP Don Page is being petitioned by a residents' action group to stop the State Government from approving a new 108ha housing and commercial development in Byron Bay.

The West Byron Project proposal before the NSW Department of Planning and Infrastructure to rezone land along Ewingsdale Road has met with opposition from the Byron Residents Association, which has started a petition on change.org, which has so far gathered more than 1000 signatures.

Petition organiser Cate Coorey said the group wanted development that "won't overwhelm the town".

"I think a lot of people didn't appreciate the massive scale of this development until they saw the map that is on the petition web page that shows how big it is relative to the town of Byron," Ms Coorey said.

"As a long-time resident, Don Page presumably loves Byron for the same reasons that we do and knows that this development will not work and will change the beautiful face of Byron irredeemably."

On Thursday Byron Shire Council will receive a report from planning staff on the West Byron Project before preparing the submission to the State Government.

The staff report highlights "key issues" with the project including funding for a bypass needed to accommodate the development, flood levels and density issues.
