Opener burns bright as Bulls build big lead

A CENTURY by opener Joe Burns yesterday saw Queensland move closer to an outright victory over Victoria in their Sheffield Shield clash at the Gabba.

The home side will resume at 2-208 this morning, with Usman Khawaja (6) and Chris Lynn (0) looking for quick runs to build on the lead of 219 in order to set the Bushrangers a tempting target.

Victoria resumed on 5-230 yesterday, and looked certain to take first-innings points, chasing the Bulls' 8-382. But after reaching 368 for the loss of seven wickets, the visitors lost 3-3 to be all out for 371.

Bulls paceman Alister McDermott led the way with 5-78 while skipper James Hopes chipped in with 3-61. David Hussey top scored for Victoria with 77.

Queensland openers Luke Pomersbach (85) and Burns (102) then scored quickly, before Bushrangers wicketkeeper Matthew Wade bowled the last over and surprisingly had Burns caught and bowled.
