A SKYWARD view photograph capturing the atrium of one of Sydney's "greenest" buildings has won the Southern Cross University Engineering Photo Competition.

Byron Bay photography enthusiast and Bay FM community radio announcer Rudiger Wasser said he thought the photo of the building's atrium went really well with the theme, which was mechanical engineering.

"The building really struck me as something outstanding architecturally," he said.

"The way it is constructed with energy efficient features, with an ingenious use of materials and space, was a very good match (with the theme).

"It is a feat of engineering."

The Clayton Utz Bligh St building in the photo has 500sqm of roof-mounted solar panels to generate electricity to power the building's air conditioning as well as a blackwater recycling system which is used in the building's toilets, cooling towers and plant irrigation.

Mr Wasser said he had been taking photographs for close to 40 years.

He was awarded a new Lytro camera from the New Camera House Lismore for his first place prize.

The university's Foundation Professor of Engineering, Professor Scott Smith, said the competition received 103 entries.

"The theme of this year's photo competition was mechanical engineering and we are very pleased to see a strong number of entries," he said.

"The range and calibre of the submitted photographs has been outstanding, aptly demonstrating the breadth and importance of the mechanical engineering discipline to our daily lives."

Jane Morgan, a SCU arts student majoring in writing, was highly commended with her photograph, Almost a Camera.

She received an iPad mini, courtesy of SCU, for her efforts.

Blake Palmer's image Condong Sugar Mill was awarded commended.

The encouragement award went to Jaden Partridge for his image, Formula Car Suspension.
