One Nation Senator: 'Some girls like being wolf whistled'

LAWS that protect women from sexual harassment are "overkill" according to One Nation Senator Malcolm Roberts, who went on to say some women enjoyed men wolf whistling at them.

Senator Roberts was appearing on ABC's Radio National to discuss racial harassment laws, when he began describing how he feels about verbal sexual harassment.

When asked if verbal sexual harassment ought to be legal, Mr Roberts said while some "girls" may find something to be a form of abuse, another might take it as a compliment.

"Is a wolf-whistle harassment? It depends on the person," he said.

"Some girls think that that is wonderful, you know they smile - others are offended.

"So wolf-whistle in one court are we going to outlaw it and another court we're going to say it's fine, a compliment?"

When asked if he thought such sexual harassment laws went too far, he said yes.

But the Senator wasn't sure whether they should change, admitting, "I haven't seen the sexual harassment laws so I'd need to read them first".

Under Australian law, sexual harassment is a "unwelcome sexual advance" or request for sex, or whose behaviour of a sexual nature is "unwelcome". It is illegal under the Sex Discrimination Act 1984.
