One in every 10 families with dependants are unemployed

MORE than 10% of Australian families with dependents were jobless in June last year, repeating a trend of recent years, figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics revealed on Wednesday.

The data on labour force and family characteristics found that one in every 10 Australian families with dependants were out of work and more than one-third of one-parent families with dependants were jobless.

Of the jobless one-parent families, 89% were found to be single mother families and 72% of jobless single mothers had children younger than 10 years old.

The figures also showed 62% of couple families with dependants had both partners working and in opposite-sex couple families, 90% had working fathers and 67% had working mothers.

There were also 1.4 million dependant students aged 15-24 years old attending school or studying full-time and still living with their parents in June last year.
