Off-duty cop assaulted in Bellingen

POLICE are appealing for information after an off-duty police officer was assaulted in Bellingen on Wednesday night.

About 10.25pm the officer who was off duty, left a hotel in Hyde St and commenced the short walk to her home.

After walking along Hyde St and into Church St she attempted to cross the road.

The 38-year-old Senior Constable was, without warning, struck to the left side of her face and fell to the ground.

The offender is described as male, approximately 20 years old and of Caucasian appearance.

He is about 173 cm tall and wearing a black 'hoodie' and blue jeans. When last seen he was running in an easterly direction along Hyde St.

The officer was able to summon assistance and other police attended a short time later.

After attending Bellingen Hospital the officer was found to have suffered soft tissue facial injuries but will be unable to work for several days.

Police from Coffs Clarence Local Area Command are investigating the incident and have urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
