A CHARITABLE crew of around-the-world sailors have dedicated their voyage to raising $22,000 for cancer research.
Local man Doug Gayford and his Canadian-based brother, John, have arrived in Coffs Harbour after 117 days at sea.
“It started as table talk years ago, before we got serious about it and persevered with the idea,” John said.
“My 25-year-old son, Daniel, was diagnosed with testicular cancer and I was diagnosed a few years as having prostate cancer.
“It was a cause very close to us as a family and fortunately both of us were able to beat it and we are both in remission now, so we thought what better way than to give back to cancer research,” he said.
The brothers hand-built the 46-foot aluminium yacht over a six-year period, naming it the GT Falcon, as John formerly worked with Ford as a mechanical engineer.
The men set sail with a crew of five from New York after the vessel was launched in Oakville, Canada, in October last year.
