NZ: Town evacuated as 'wall of water bears down'

THE CLARENCE River - on the north eastern side of New Zealand's south island - has burst through debris from last night's quake and sent a wall of water gushing down upon nearby towns.

Marlborough Council has warned residents to move to higher ground as the water - which some reports say has formed a wall that is 15 metres high - makes its way through the river to the coast,

The NZ Herald reports the river was initially blocked by debris from a landslide - the result of last night's quake.

When the river broke through the debris it sent a 15 metre high wall of water gushing down stream.

There were fears for a group of 16 rafters who were on the river at the time however they have since been confirmed to be safe.

Residents in towns close to the river have been told to move to higher ground immediately.
