Number's up for LNP phone secrets

SECRET LNP missives intended for Member for Condamine Ray Hopper have been inadvertently sent to a Melbourne woman who uses the MP’s old mobile phone number.

Liz Burton said she was “absolutely fed up” after receiving dozens of text messages and phone calls from people looking for Mr Hopper.

In a bizarre twist, Mrs Burton bought a new phone about 12 months ago and was assigned the new number — identical to Mr Hopper’s former number.

She has since received text messages, some containing internal LNP information, and many phone calls.

Their frequency spiked at times when Mr Hopper was prominent in the media.

Mrs Burton received several messages of congratulations when Mr Hopper won pre-selection for the LNP in the seat of Condamine last month.

She claimed she had complained to his office on numerous occasions.

“I’m not interested in getting all these messages,” a frustrated Mrs Burton told The Chronicle.

“People trying to organise meetings, people talking about people behind their backs.

“Of course it’s annoying.”

A spokeswoman from Mr Hopper’s office said the phone carrier had contacted Mrs Burton to try to negotiate for her to switch to a new number.

“But she’s not interested,” they said.

Mrs Burton’s frustrations were clear.

“Why should I be forced to change my number?”
