Northern Territory sports minister resigns in video scandal

NORTHERN Territory sports minister Nathan Barrett has resigned from the Cabinet over allegations he sent sexually explicit videos to a woman in his electorate.

Mr Barrett, who was only appointed to the ministry in February, issued a statement announcing his resignation, the ABC reported.

"I am very disappointed with my actions," Mr Barrett said in the statement.

"I endeavour to represent my community effectively and improve the lives of the people of Blain and the entire Northern Territory."

In  his statement, Mr Barrett said he had an inappropriate relationship with a woman.

The NT News revealed earlier today that he had sent her sexually explicit videos.

Mr Barrett's statement announcing his resignation from the Cabinet indicated he would remain as the Member for Blain.

The ABC reported NT Chief Minister Adam Giles would take over the sports minister responsibilities until the August election.

The NT government has been the subject of a number of scandals in the past several years.

Last September, the Attorney General John Elferink and Treasurer Dave Tollner were heavily criticised for comments made against a female staff member of parliament.

The Attorney General said he wanted to slap the woman, and the treasurer told her to 'toughen up princess' after she publicly condemned the comments.

At the time of his comments, Mr Elferink was a White Ribbon Ambassador, tasked with raising awareness about violence against women.

He was later dumped as an ambassador.
