Entertain the kids this Christmas

FINDING a way to keep the kids entertained these school holidays isn’t always easy, as Ballina grandparents Ross and Beryl Murray know.

Three of their grandchildren – Indiah, 10, Keeley, 9, and Edyn Linklater, 7, of Brisbane – have been visiting this week.

Yesterday, the family, like many others, was at the Ballina Memorial Pool, where the three sisters enjoyed the popular waterslide.

On a busy day, more than 400 children will take a ride or two on the slide, which is always closely supervised by a couple of lifeguards.

“We’ve been on it too many times to count,” Keeley said.

“It’s scary the first time but after that it’s lots of fun.”

Mrs Murray said she and her husband had also taken the girls to Minyon Falls and for a walk along North Wall to watch dolphins playing in the Richmond River.

“Sometimes when they visit we go fishing as well, and we also go to the movies,” she said.

“We like to do lots of different activities with them.”

And there’s plenty to choose from on the Northern Rivers - even if it rains, as forecast, later this week.

Australian Seabird Rescue is offering regular tours of its Ballina headquarters.

The Macadamia Castle at Knockrow is another popular destination. It features an animal park, playground, train ride and mini golf.

Owner Tony Gilding said he expected the attractions to be busy.

“We’re optimistic and we had a good summer last year,” he said.

“We just unveiled some new carnival alley-type amusements, like those bendy mirrors.

“And we’ve got new calves, but I believe that petting the bunny rabbits is still the best thing.”
