There's no reason to shame overweight people

OPINION: Tell me if this is constructive.

A fitness guru whose lessons for a healthy life include: "Don't accept that you are fat. You should be uncomfortable about it, you should be ashamed about it. You need to do something about it".

Now point out the person, slightly overweight, obese or otherwise, who would respond well to those words.

The Queensland-based personal trainers, Julius and Sharny Kieser, who have used those revolting sentences as their credo have probably earned a fortune thanks to the fat of a few of their clients, but that's not enough - let's shame people into coming back for more, let's make people hate themselves.

Overweight, obese people regularly get judged.

Well, I'm sick of it.

I'm never going to walk down the catwalk in Milan as a size 8 supermodel, but I'm happy with myself.

I try to be nice to people, even the ones who annoy me.

I try to be helpful and get along with people and I feel I've led a fairly blameless life without hurting other people.

I make a point to never comment on another person's weight. Why? Because it's none of my business.

I'm not going to tell a thin person they should be eating more or criticise an overweight person because of my own hang-ups.

People, no doubt thinking they are giving me a boost, sometimes tell me that they think I've lost weight.

I hate that - it's a back-handed compliment at best and completely irrelevant at its worst.

Health is important, but overweight people aren't always unhealthy, any more than thin people are always healthy.

Society needs to get over its hang-ups on personal appearance.
