No laughing matter for Akmal

COMEDIAN Akmal Saleh has pulled the plug on his Rockhampton flood charity show after claiming he received threats from residents.

When he spoke with the ABC on Monday Akmal said Rocky bullies had threatened him through “messages on the internet, Facebook and other things”.

“(They) didn’t actually say ‘we’re going to bash you’ but they might as well have,” he said.

But his spokeswoman insisted Akmal was referring to past comments.

“They followed his appearance on GNW nearly a year ago and do not relate to this instance,” she said.

The spokeswoman said yesterday morning Akmal could not speak with The Bully because his Gladstone gig at 8pm was almost sold out.

She said an interview today was not possible either as they “will be focusing on the remaining tour shows”.

Akmal also told the ABC poor ticket sales factored into the cancellation.

It seems the joke’s on Akmal, with The Morning Bulletin told the number of tickets sold would not warrant a cancellation under normal circumstances.

It looks like the joker has come good on his promise to Good News Week presenter Paul McDermott not to return to Rockhampton for a few years.

In the same episode he said he hated the Beef Capital.

“We should remove Rockhampton from Australia and put it in Afghanistan,” Akmal said on the show. “If I offended anyone from Rockhampton, go and get f.....!”

It’s been a rocky ride for celebrity’s touring through the city in the past two years, with Jimmy Barnes criticised for singing too loudly.

A Rocky man said he couldn’t hear his TV in his home three blocks away.
