NiE Learning the Aussie lingo
HOW well do you know your 'strine' - the words and phrases that have become iconic to Australians?
The English language arrived in Australia when the First Fleet arrived in 1788.
Since that time it has been formed and adapted to give Australians a specific dialect.
There has been many influences which shaped the development of Australian slang.
Our lingo has borrowed words and phrases from Indigenous languages, the 'flash language' of convicts as well as vocabulary developed during the gold rush, experiences of the bush and war times.
