NEWLYWEDS enjoying their wedding reception were blissfully unaware that just metres away two armed robbers were stealing thousands of dollars from the bar.

The robbery at the North Rockhampton Bowls Club on Glenmore Road happened about 10.15pm on Saturday.

Secretary and manager Suzanne Lund said they lost $12,000, which was a bitter blow for a club still recovering from the effects of January's floods.

The club had a busy day with men's pairs bowls in the morning, followed by a barbecue and then a wedding reception for 90 people.

By 10.15pm the only people at the club were those at the reception.

Mrs Lund believed the two men, who had covered their faces with scarves, had “cased” the club before confronting bar staff with knives.

She said while one man demanded money from staff at the main bar, the other acted as a lookout.

“They were very aware something was happening down there (in the function room). One kept going to look at the passageway to make sure no one is coming up.”

She said one customer who was playing in the pokies room came out, saw what was happening, and ducked into the function room to call the police.

Police said the two men fled on foot after they had taken money from the tills.

Mrs Lund said the two female bar staff, while uninjured, were traumatised and would be offered counselling.

They had done what they were trained to do and handed over the money, she said.

Mrs Lund said the loss would hit the club hard.

“That's a lot of money for a club that's been through the floods.”
