FORMER top-level netball player Briony Akle has been named a Rob Wright's replacement as coach of the NSW Swifts.

Wright stood down from the role for personal reasons about five weeks ago.

Akle was on Thursday named to the role and will lead the NSW team in the Super Netball competition in 2018.

Akle has signed a three-year deal with the Swifts.

"I am both humbled and honoured to be taking up this role at such a respected club," she said.

"Some of the greatest players to have ever graced the game have worn the Swifts dress and I am really looking forward to working with the current group who have really impressed me so far.

"I know that this club has a long-term vision and I am delighted to get the opportunity to take over and help steer the Swifts back to where they belong at the pinnacle of the game."

Wright opted to rebuild the NSW Swifts from the inside out in 2017 with his team the least experienced in the competition.

However, the Swifts at times performed above expectations and are now seen as a genuine contender for a top-four spot in 2017.
