New fund to nurture talented young musicians

A new fund launched last week to support young musicians will nurture new talent and foster the growth of music in the area.
East Coast Roots and Blues Festival director Peter Noble said the launch of the new Bluesfest Fund, by the Northern Rivers Community Foundation (NRCF) and Bluesfest, was very exciting.
“This will give us a chance to nurture young talent and to say to young people that we believe in you and we support you,” he said.
“Bluesfest has always nurtured young musicians and this year the festival will feature performances from the Steiner School band and the Byron Bay High School band.”
The fund will raise money to encourage and develop young talent in the local music industry.
An initial donation by Bluesfest was very welcome, NRCF chair Christopher Dean said.
“We were looking for ways to help local talent, so we approached Bluefest with our idea for a fund,” he said.
“The foundation is very excited about the launch as we will be able to link young musicians with the broader community.
“We have some fantastic musical talent in this area and we want to grow it.”
Mr Dean said it was hoped the fund would this year raise at least $25,000.
He said young musicians would be asked to apply for grants from the fund and this could be in the form of a scholarship or a grant.
People attending Bluesfest this year will be asked to make an extra donation to the fund when purchasing tickets.
Contributions will also be encouraged from established musicians, promoters and anyone who has already made it in the music industry.
A VIP five-day pass to Bluesfest is up for grabs to the highest bidder, with all money going to the Bluesfest Fund.
