New balcony bar for Great Northern

A new Great Northern Hotel balcony bar above the Jonson Street footpath has been given the go-ahead by Byron Council.

The balcony is a feature of a planned major renovation which will see a number of accommodation rooms on the first floor converted to a bar area.

At last week’s council meeting Cr Patrick Morrissey expressed concern about the safety of people using wheelchairs and pushing prams.

The council will look at realigning the footpath dining area and for leasing council ‘air space’ above the footpath for commercial operations.
