Naked schoolies posts spark call for early sex education

SHOCKING images of naked schoolies circulating on social media have promoted a renewed call for a national approach to sex education that starts in Prep.

Family Planning Queensland manager of research and program development, Holly Brennan, said children "who receive age appropriate sexuality and relationship education from early childhood are safer from sexual abuse".

Ms Brennan said the advent of social media had made it even more vital for a co-ordinated approach.

And she said research conducted in Cairns and on the Sunshine Coast showed an overwhelming number of parents agreed with this.

This is not a scientific poll. The results reflect only the opinions of those who chose to participate.

It showed 92% of parents favoured teachers delivering sexuality and relationships education in schools.

But she believed there needed to be a standardised, national approach to "helping young people negotiate being safe and respectful online".

"It's a part of their lives, they have grown up with online and mobile access. It is central to their education," she said.

"We need to help young people be critical users of technology."

Ms Brennan said many schools on the Sunshine Coast were already "doing a fantastic job", but a co-ordinated approach was needed, integrating strategies to stay safe online and offline.

"We are hoping from Prep to Year 12 there will be age-appropriate, developmentally appropriate education that tackles all issues dealing with sexuality and relationships," she said.
