Mums rally in Byron Bay for home birth rights

A rally at Byron Bay on Saturday focused attention on planned new legislation which will limit a woman’s ability to have a home birth.

From July next year women will no longer be able to choose a home birth for their babies, with the new legislation making indemnity insurance unavailable for home birth midwives.

Organised by the Northern Rivers Maternity Action Group, Saturday’s rally started with a march through the town, followed by a gathering at Railway Park.

Those taking part wanted to get the message across to the Federal Government that home birth, with appropriate care from registered midwives, needed to remain a legal choice for all women.
