Mum says ‘thanks’ for finding her missing son

THE mum of Pottsville teenager Alex van Honk has reached out to thank the Tweed community after her missing son was found on Monday.

She specifically thanked his rescuer Blake Prior and said she was "sorry about the huge cuddle you had to endure".

Narelle Meighan said on the Tweed Byron LAC Facebook page she and her family were "overwhelmed by the support of everyone and thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your concern and support throughout this horrific time".

Mr Prior was also commenting on the Tweed Police's Facebook status about Alex's disappearance.

"He had a bike and he just took off. He's lucky I spotted him while I was at work. Glad he is home and safe now," Mr Prior said.

Ms Meighan thanked Mr Prior for his "quick thinking" and the Tweed community for their vigilance.

"The community has had a huge input into helping us find Alex, without them and all the support I don't know what we would have done," she said.

"I'm Alex's mum and I have tried to advise the community and hoped the word would spread. My daughter and I were out searching for him and got word a bike had been found abandoned. We went to the place and found it was Alex's.

"We called police and started a search of the area. About four or five hours later we got word that he'd been found by Blake at Hastings Point."

Ms Meighan said Alex was still in hospital, but was recovering from his ordeal.

"I'm sure everyone will understand our unbelievable gratitude to Blake for his quick thinking and calm handling of the situation," she said.

"Once again Blake, sorry about the huge cuddle you had to endure.

Alex, 16, went missing on Saturday morning, but thanks to the police and the public, he was back in his family's arms by Monday afternoon.

It is understood Alex has an intellectual disability and requires extra care.
