Mum 'disgusted' at rides, stalls at Christmas carols

WHILE thousands of people left the 4GR Mayoral Carols by Candlelight with smiles on their faces, one Toowoomba mum was not impressed.

The annual carols night was held last night at Queens Park with many taking advantage of the event to make it a family night out.

As well as performances of everyone's favourite Christmas carols, there was also rides to entertain the children, market stalls with Christmas merchandise and food vans for those who felt a little peckish throughout the event.

Do you think Christmas events are becoming too commercialised?

While many people embraced the rides and stalls it was these extra elements that disappointed Margaret-ann Herschell.

In a post on The Chronicle's Facebook page, Ms Herschell describes her frustration at the ''commercialisation'' of the event.

"I must be getting old. I haven't been to the carols for a few years. I took my children last night and was disappointed and disgusted," she said.

"Why are there rides? Why are there market stalls and food vans? Who made it about money? Seriously disappointed in humans after last night.

"I think the council should make it like it was - about family, about Christmas, about just enjoying something together without making it about money.

"Some people aren't loaded with money and they take their kids to these things because they are free and then their kids are sad because they can see everyone else enjoying rides, buying toys and food.

"But they can't because they can't afford it. It defeats the purpose of why we even go.

"It's not about the money, it's about family. The only money handed around should have been in those buckets for Sunshine Way.

"Damn, I'm not religious but it's about Jesus. Wake up humans."
